The History of Patterson Park Youth Baseball

Patterson Park Youth Baseball has been in continuous operation in the Dayton, Ohio area for over 60 years. Hosting numerous leagues for baseball and softball players, Patterson Park has been a cornerstone of the community, giving youth an opportunity to gain valuable athletic and life skills.

In 1959, Clarence Smith, Milford Jones, and Dick Riner formed the league to give local children a place to grow their baseball skills. Lacking a location, they set out to find the perfect spot for the newly formed group. Eventually finding a spot on Irving Avenue across from the Oak-Day Swimming Pool, they negotiated the use of the land with Woodland Cemetery and the City of Dayton.

In early 1960, the trio elected officers and found sponsors for the inaugural season, the first being Ray Bryant Chevrolet. The opening season consisted of 10 teams across 2 age groups.
