All adult volunteers and staff at Patterson Park need a background check every 3 years. Patterson Park will also randomly do an early re-check of approximately 10 persons each year that are in their 1st or 2nd year after last being routinely checked. For these persons the time cycle is reset so these persons get another 3 year cycle.Each person needs to provide to Patterson Park is a copy of front of their Ohio Driver’s License or equivalent government photo ID.

Most copies are sent electronically as a text to the Patterson Park officer named in the notification message, but a paper copy is also adequate.
The actual background checks are done by a very, very trustworthy person who is appointed in the spring for that calendar year by the Patterson Park President, and approved by the Board of Directors.
The President makes at least a spring and fall report to the Board, or more often as necessary. The President keeps the information (names, license info and background check results) on file. It is never shared with any other person, group, company or government agency.
Note: In 2021, at the request of a compelling majority of volunteers affected, the President recommended that the Board of Directors of Patterson Park approve the use of that data for future background checks as they come due, for the convenience of the persons subject to this policy, so each person does not need to re-submit their driver’s license info every time they need a background check. The Board approved unanimously, and this has worked very well since then.
